Where is Osteopathy From and How Did it Start?
It started over 100 years ago by Dr. A.T. Still.  He was a civil war doctor during the US civil war.  Disheartened by medicine of his time he developed his own unique system of healing through the gentle manipulation of the body.

Osteopathic Concept of Disease
The human body is a living machine which is supremely adaptable to changes within and around it. When responding to injury our body shifts into an adaptive mechanism. An injury produces a local change which passes beyond the limit of spontaneous resolution.  Various adaptations made in all other parts of the body structure persist as new demands are made upon this living mechanism. In response to these numerous structural changes, changes in circulation and nerve impulses also occur and in-turn create areas of greater susceptibility to infection, or hypertrophy or degeneration.

Osteopathic Treatment
Attention is given to the total patient and not just to the manifested effect. In other words an Osteopathic Manual Practitioner looks at the entire person and not just where it “hurts”. The Osteopathic Manual Practitioner uses their sensitized hands to search for the fundamental causes of ailments while simultaneously alleviating the associated pain or discomfort. Through the use of a trained perceptive, the Osteopathic Manual Practitioner's discriminating fingers will search for, find, and endeavour to correct the fundamental causes of ailments. This produces a more enduring and complete change within the body permitting a reversal of those adaptive changes and restoring health.
